Originally from Panama, Sosa now 69, has been helping with the free roaming horses since she moved out to Placitas with her previous employer in 2000. To Sosa helping the horses is what she feels she was put on this earth to do and is glad to take up the burden. “I’m very happy to do (it) because it was nice to see those eyes (everyday),” Sosa said, “to have them come to you and talk to you, and to a degree they are saying ‘thank you,’ once they accept you as part of their herds they kind of greet you even better than people. To feed all the horses, Placitas Wild purchases 120-150 bales of hay a week to feed the horses. Due to a spike in hay prices in recent years Placitas Wild has spent $1,600 a week on hay which is funded through donations, fundraisers and at times out of pocket by the women. “A horse eats a 1/3 of a bale of hay and we have 70 plus horses, and we didn't always give them that much because they could forage a little bit,” Johnson said. Sierra, a senior when the Dec. 7, shooting happened has decided to pursue a career in criminal justice due to her passion to end school shootings. Sierra was in the building where Casey Jordan Marquez, a senior, and Francisco Fernandez, a junior, lost their lives. The shooter took his own life a few doors down from Sierra’s classroom. Since the shooting she and her family, (her younger sister, Daniella, a freshman during the time of the shooting was in the classroom below Sierra’s, and has suffered from depression, PTSD and anxiety), have attempted to rebuild their lives. I spent a full day with her and her family and attended a ride along she had with New Mexico State Police. “I just knew I needed to do something. ... Bailey Canyon is one of three meadows the Sacramento Mountains Checkerspot is known to inhabit in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The meadow is currently fenced to protect the butterfly habitat and keep out feral grazing horses that trample and feed off of the penstemon. Many theories have emerged as to why the butterflies reside in such a limited range.
